Guitar Buyer February 2008

This has just hit the news stands and of particular note in an excellent and varied issue is the official announcement of Guitar Idol 2008!

We have been working hard behind the scenes for several months now on this mega new international talent search with Guitar Buyer and Licklibrary.com and we're all very excited about this!

There is some serious gear porn in this issue with reviews of the sumptous Collings I-35 acoustic, Rainsong's graphite WS1000 acoustic and no less than three Dr Z hand wired boutique amps as well as thee excellent Hughes & Kettner Statesman Quad EL84.

Coupled with an interview with the Dark Lord of Riffery Tony Iommi this and aninteresting intereview with Britsh Classical Lujtier Gary Hearn this warrants a trip down to your local newsagents post haste!

2008 Guitar World Readers Poll Results!

A great interview with Kirk Hammett in the February 2008 issue which brings to mindthe epic spreads that Guitar World used to do in the latre 1980's, along with Tony Iommi, Jeff Beck etc is well worth a look.

Also some interesting results from the latest Readers Poll Results from an increasingly back on from Guitar World magazine - and the website www.guitarworld.com is well worth a regular look in as well.

They have an up to the minute look at the LA NAMM show as well so make sure you check it out.

To see the complete list of winners and runner-ups, look inside the March 2008 issue.

We've put this up in the Forum so have your say; some interesting stuff but not entirely convinced - however the guitar public have had their say so who am I to quibble!

Guitarist Issue 299: February 2008

A good issue wwith reviews of the new Taylor Electric guitar, the fabulous Blackstar amps (who are based in Northampton, UK near AOG Towers: they exhibited at our own Allout Guitarfest back in September 2007) and some good interviews with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers axeman supreme Buddy Whittington, the amazing Brad Davis (with video lesson) new Brits Oceansize and one of my personal faves Tony Macalpine, alongside the Godlike Billy Sheehan talking about their Devils Slingshot band.

Words of advice from Tony that the legions of shred guitarists should take heed:

"Music is an art of learning, and learning is an expression of life. My teacher told me you have to be able to live a little bit to play music. The guy that sits in a room and practises eight or nine hours a day doesn't have an understanding of what people want to hear. You really won't grow musically unless you start jamming with people. You're going to learn so much from older musicians. Music is all about communication. So go out and make friends with a lot of musicians and play, don't just sit in your room and practise."

The magazine is on sale till mid February so go and buy it and try Adrian Clark's excellent Jeff Beck Style Analysis.

Guitar Techniques February 2008

A 'Rock'n'Roll' special this month which will probaably find a limited appeal, however is well worth checking out for those random nights when down the Ferret & Firkin and requisite old git at the bar berates you for your fleet fingered legato excursions and "not being able to play like they used to"...

Excellent columns as ever by ACM, Guitar-X, BIMM and ICMP as well as Shaun Baxter and Pete Callards masterful montly tutorials. Someone at Future please collate columns like these into a stand alone Tutorial series: they will blow away anything else on the market and prove invaluable to professional guitarteachers and serious students alike!
