Michael Romeo is the whirlwind guitar player with prog metal greats Symphony X. As far as neo-classical shred guitarists go he is defiantly one of my favourites, especially for his very unique approach to tapping within arpeggios and pentatonics. In this style file were going to take a look at some tapping shapes which will instantly give you that Romeo sound. Also there will be some arpeggio shapes and then a very cool way of shredding pentatonics in lick 5.

Check out the Full Track to see how I applied these licks in a suitably Symphony X style musical context.

After you have worked through the examples, try playing over the backing. Play the licks and sequences presented here, and see how to weave them into a 'real' musical situation - and don't forget to expand upon these and try some of your own.

Happy shredding and I’ll see you soon...

Cheers

Licks 1&2 are quite long, but they fit with the backing track and have a lot of ideas for you to get your head round such as arpeggio shapes and a varying degree of tapping shapes for to get your head around.

As with Lick 1 there are a lot of ideas for you to get your head round such as arpeggio shapes and a varying degree of tapping shapes for to get your head around.

Lick 3 is kind of a reverse way of playing a minor arpeggio shape to make it sound more interesting.

Lick 4 is a lick used quite a lot by Michael Romeo and if truth be told a lick I have stolen to use for myself on occasions. It’s a very accessible way of shredding a first position pentatonic shape.

Lick 5 is another cool pentatonic shape that sounds really fluid at high speed and still maintains the distinct tone of a pentatonic first position shape.
