MASTER OF THE BASS, LAURENCE COTTLE, WOWS INSTITUTE STUDENTS

MASTER OF THE BASS, LAURENCE COTTLE, WOWS INSTITUTE STUDENTS!

Laurence Cottle is one of the world's greatest bassists and the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance was delighted to recently host a masterclass with this ‘Master of the Bass'.

Laurence is, by his own words, a ‘composer, arranger and sometime bassist' who has played with many of the industry's greatest and who, when left to his own devices, ventures into the world of jazz making  several notable releases such as ‘Five Seasons' and ‘Laurence Cottle Big Band'.

His musical pedigree is dizzyingly diverse, ranging from featuring on soundtracks to movies such as Lethal Weapon and Britney Spears' Crossroads, as well as writing music for US sitcom Friends and the world renowned Oprah Winfrey Show. This is in addition to his simply stellar playing and recording CV, which includes Black Sabbath, Eric Clapton, Sting, Cher, Seal, Brian Eno, Procul Harum, the Bee Gees and Mike Oldfield. And if that wasn't enough he even played with bass legend Jaco Pastorius!

Questions will always come thick and fast from the audience when an artist with Laurence's experience presents a clinic, and this was no exception, but when the artist is as open and generous as Laurence then the event really takes off. His advice and guidance was always very pertinent and he was very sincere in trying to pass on the benefit of his hard-earned experience. He even set them some objectives to achieve before his next visit!

The event was a roaring success with many happy students leaving the event to go home and practice, but all of them relishing the unique opportunity of getting advice from such an inspirational musician.
